OCT. 4 ISSUE ANSWERS: Franklin Harold Hayward was born in Bruce Township June 30, 1867. He was a well-known oil painter in the United States and Europe. In 1871 his parents moved to Mount Clemens to be involved in the new salt bath treatments. Dr. Hayward and Franklin’s mother, Alice, encouraged their son’s artistic talents. As a teenager, Franklin opened his own studio in Mount Clemens near the baths. His parents sent Franklin to study art in Detroit with W. B. Conley. He early on was sent to Chicago to study art under John Vanderpool and Oliver Dewitt Grover. He returned to Mount Clemens where he continued painting. He primarily painted portraits and later landscapes. Franklin knew he had to study the great artists of Europe so he and Olive moved to Paris. While in Paris, he studied under James Abbott McNeill Whistler from 1898- 1901. He traveled through Italy and England, painting. He was exhibited in the Paris Salon. He returned to Mount Clemens and continued painting till he was 78 years old. The painting above will someday be located in the Romeo Historical Society’s collection. It was painted by Franklin when he was 25 years old in 1892. It is called Lake Seneca New York 1892. At that time Franklin was studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. He painted for exhibitors at the Columbian Exposition, the Chicago World’s Fair that year. I believe that there is a nice collection of his works at the Crocker Museum in Mount Clemens. R.
