MARCH 1 ISSUE ANSWERS: A team of museum staff members worked on this project. Chris Chirco discovered the 1826 John Farmer map of Lower Michigan, included last week. The map identifies original “roads” which in many cases were Indian paths widened to allow a cart or wagon to pass. The map labels old villages or hamlets such as McDougal’s Ville (Utica) or Hoxie Settlement (Romeo). Anthony Kowalchick, GIS, I call him our master cartographer, produced very accurate maps of the area for the museum and suggested the route many early Romeo settlers chose to travel from Mount Clemens to Romeo. Then I took Anthony’s beautiful map and not so carefully labeled the route for the readers, my apologies to the map maker. It is pretty obvious that the closest route from Mount Clemens to Romeo was north on what is now North Avenue and follow what we call Indian Trail Road to Romeo. Previously we identified the various boats available that Romeo settlers used to cross Lake Erie from New York areas. This somewhat completes the journey. R.
