FEBRUARY 15 ISSUE ANSWERS: Gad Chamberlin was responsible for bringing three families to Romeo, Erastus and Daniel Day (cousins) and Sylvanus Taft. Daniel Day’s family members were Tories in Canada during the War of 1812. They operated a tavern where British soldiers would gather. The British Army attempted to draft the cousins into the British Army. The Boys refused to swear allegiance to the King and were thrown into a block house as prisoners. They escaped from the wooden structure by throwing powder from a cartridge box into a fire. The explosion blew a hole in their prison and enabled them to make their escape. By 1827, Daniel Day, a carpenter, had traveled to Romeo to live. In 1846, Daniel built the dark colored Greek Revival house at 307 North Main Street. After the Federal Style of American architecture at the turn of the century, Greek revival homes were built copying the Greek temples in Greece. Greece had just won its independence from the Turks and everything Greek was wonderful. These Greek revival style homes were supposed to represent the classical light colored temples. As a result, most Greek revival homes are painted white with black or forest green shutters. Daniel was a character. He enjoyed upsetting his neighbors with the color of his house. His depression might have started with the death of his fiancé when he was a young man or his imprisonment. He later lived with a married woman because he said, “neither of us could do better.” R.
