AUGUST 17 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This church at the corner of Lafayette and Fremont Streets was Romeo’s first Catholic Church. Local Catholics gathered together starting in 1921 and met in area homes. Fr. Carrell came from Rochester by Model T to celebrate mass on Sunday mornings. Since there was no church, a loan of $1,000 was acquired to purchase land and begin a building process. At that time the group became a mission of Lapeer under FR. Thomas Carey. The building was built in 1924 by member’s labor and teams and wagons. The chandeliers came from the Dodge mansion in Grosse Pointe. “Ed Verellen, using a wagon drawn by the untiring Model T, hauled the side altars and communion railings from St. Paul’s church in Grosse Pointe.” A flat tire interrupted the trip, making Ed walk home from Washington Township leaving the car and wagon beside the road. The present church, St. Clement was first established as a separate parish on July 5, 1939. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
