AUGUST 10 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): When passing St. Clement’s Catholic Church celebrating 100 years, I thought about how old Romeo is. Recently Romeo celebrated its 175 anniversary. That was when it became an official village according to the State of Michigan. But Romeo is really older than that. Native Americans, the French and Jeremiah Allen all came before 1822, but they did not stay! Asheal and Cynthia Bailey arrived in Mount Clemens in 1821. In February 1822 they arrived in Romeo and bought a cabin from Jeremiah Allen. Allen just wanted to leave the area. Romeo was first called Indian Village and next Hoxie Corner finally Romeo. The way this curator sees it, this village is 200 years old. The Baileys had three homes here. One is still standing and in great shape. The Baileys lived in Romeo, raised a family in Romeo and are buried in Romeo. They were our first residents that stayed. I call this 200 years! Happy Birthday Indian Village, Hoxie Corner and Romeo.
