AUGUST 10 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): “…all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then and thenceforward, and forever free:..” (Emancipation Proclamation, Jan 1, 1863) This chair was in Lincoln’s Cabinet room at the White House in September as he and his Cabinet wrote the above document. The chair was made by the Meeks Furniture Company. The above engraving shows Secretary Stanton sitting in one of the 24 chairs in the collection.
