MAY 18 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This is a Victorian skirt lifter. The fashion for ladies was long floor length skirts and dresses. Getting around in the cumbersome skirts could be a challenge. Going up stairs or walking outside in muddy streets or dusty sidewalks soiled the hemline. The metal clip was worn over the belt at the waistline. The fabric of the garment was pinched between the opposite ends. The ridges of the clip’s end would accommodate different fabric thicknesses. The wearer could then walk the stairs or muddy areas outside without having to continuously hold her skirt off the ground. This left both of her hands free to carry packages or a parasol or maybe to walk arm in arm with that special beau. But she had to be careful not to show too much ankle! That would be a scandal. Researched by Gloria Billo, Romeo Historical Society staff Gloria suggests that you visit the Church Street Museum to view the manikin with the skirt lifter, Tuesdays 7-9 p.m.
