APRIL 13 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This photo is of Kinchen Artis, Romeo resident. Kinchen Artis was a member of Company H, 1st Michigan Colored Infantry, mustered in Battle Creek on December 19, 1863 at the age of 37. This photo of Artis is one of the few that exist of men in Michigan’s only African American Civil War unit. He is buried in the Romeo Cemetery with two other black Civil War soldiers, Samuel Huff and Peter Ebo. Born in 1831 and died in 1905, Kinchen served for three years and earned the rank of Corporal. Black Civil War soldiers were discriminated against in many ways. They received lower pay and had the more undesirable duties. Even having a photo taken was unusual. He is buried in section 10 of the cemetery. Look for an American flag. Richard Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
