MARCH 9 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): Haller “origineel” kerosene stoves were originally made in Ottensen (Hamburg), Germany. The need for these stoves during the Industrial Revolution was manifest. Droves of rural residents came to the cities to find work creating a housing shortage. Virtually any habitable structure was considered rentable even without a kitchen. In those circumstances, a Haller stove was indispensable. This stove is of enameled steel (granite ware) construction. It is comprised of a base, a large fuel reservoir for easy filling, wick assembly and top section that holds the pot or tea kettle. Even in a home with a large cook stove it had its uses. On a warm summer day, a one pot meal could be heated up without firing the larger stove and heating the house. If friends stopped by, tea could be made quicker than firing up the main stove. For a special treat, it could be taken outdoors for an alfresco meal on a warm summer evening. Smores anyone?
