DECEMBER 29 ISSUE ANSWERS (photos to right): The photo two weeks ago showed wooden pilings holding up the iron beams of the bridge. This current photo shows concrete pilings and soil pushed up to the bridge supports. The original bridge was built about 1869 for the Michigan Airline Rail Road. This was a 20 mile track that connected Romeo with Richmond. The Grand Trunk passed through Richmond at the time. Now citizens could travel to Detroit or Port Huron with this short line connection. The railroad was eventually extended as far west as Jackson by the 1880s. The first trains to pass over the bridge were the lighter Baldwin engines. After 1908, a heavier engine traveled the line and stronger supports were needed. This bridge is being currently used on the Macomb Orchard Trail just east of Powell Road. It has a new surface and railings but the steel beams are the same as in the old photo. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
