NOV. 24 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This oil painting is of Nowlan Lake on Lassier Road south of 34 Mile Road. In the background is the highest point in Macomb County. Known as Mount Trombley, the knoll has went through a number of phases: first it was a large dairy farm, then the location of the 1926 mansion of Edward F. Fisher which was bulldozed when his wife refused to live in the Bruce Township wilderness. Today, Mount Trombley is the site of the Ford Motor Company Michigan Proving Grounds. Ford has removed the top of the hill. It now appears as Trombley “Hill.” The painting was done by William W. Gibbs of Romeo. Gibbs lived many years in Romeo with a studio in the old Newbury building at the northwest corner. He painted local citizen’s portraits but loved to paint landscapes of the surrounding areas. The Romeo Historical Society has collected about twenty of his paintings. The RHS has located about twenty more that local citizens have hanging on their walls in their homes. These Gibbs paintings are very special to many Romeo folks. They are a moment in time of Romeo’s past. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
