NOVEMBER 10 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This is the most photographed corner of Romeo. As to the age of the photo, there are no automobiles, just two buggies. The first building to the left was Newbury’s general store and Casey’s grocery. This building was razed in June of 1925 to make way for the new Community National Bank. It is now the Town Hall Antique Mall. The second building was the Citizen’s Bank with the protruding overhang. After the first building collapsed in 1925 and later fire, the third story of this one was removed. You can still see the outline in the bricks of the third floor windows. The three story long brick building in the center has changed very little since being built in 1857. Only windows are altered from the original ones. The fourth two story building has had some alterations in the front and windows of the north most store. Finally, the Romeo opera house was finished in 1870, and in spite of four fires the exterior has changed little. There were earlier buildings in some locations, if not all, but descriptions of these earlier buildings is limited to just two. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
