SEPT. 13 ISSUE ANSWERS: The picture on the left was made by the Romeo Concrete Stave Silo Company located on Sisson Street in Romeo. There are many of these Romeo silos in and around Romeo. You can tell it is a Romeo manufacturer by the 45 degree angles on the ends of the staves. The picture on the right is of a Smith Silo Company silo of Oxford, Michigan. This silo is on the Romeo Historical Society Barn Tour on Sept. 23. If you go, see if you can find the sign. Grain storage has always been important to mankind. Remember Joseph in the Bible storing grain in Egypt for the coming famine? The Greek word “siros” means a pit to hold grain. It wasn’t until the 1880’s and 90’s that the round tower silos were invented. Square wooden silos were unsuccessfully used before with the product spoiling and walls rotting. In the early 1800’s, farmers experimented making silage. Silage is a mixture of plant material, corn, stock and hay mixed together with the right percentage of moisture and temperature for animals like goats and cattle.
