OCTOBER 19 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): The second floor of the Romeo Historical Society’s Bancroft/Stranahan Museum on Church Street contains five individual rooms. A clothing room has historic clothes from 1840 to 1970. The Elizabeth Clark bedroom tells the story of one of Romeo’s earliest immigrants. These is a textile room and “Undies of Romeo” room. The photo of the bedroom shows a rope bed, about 1840, with an 1830 coverlet by C. Palin. To the right is a sick tray, for those who cannot leave the bed and a nightstand with pitcher and bowl for morning washing. Underneath is a bowl to save the cold trip out back to the outhouse. Above the bed is a painting by Williams Gibbs, a 19th century Romeo oil painter, of two hunting dogs. The above described items make up about one half the artifacts in this room. A 45-star American flag has just been placed in the collection. It is easy to spend two hours touring this museum and it’s free. Tuesdays 7-9 p.m. all year! Richard Beringer, but Joan Beringer, curator, is the real story teller.
