DECEMBER 22 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This engraving shows the American Hotel at the southwest corner of Lafayette and South Main streets in Romeo. Mr. Teller was the owner. Later it was named the Golling, Dewey, Romeo and maybe the Commercial Hotel. A number of locals lived in the hotel, such as servants, clerks and laborers. When salesmen came to town, they would set up their displays in the sample rooms. There was a billiard room and a dining room for locals and visitors. One room was set aside as a reading room. Over the years the rear and front of the hotel were reconstructed in brick. The final hotel was demolished in 1963. Romeo Historical Society staff Remember this Romeo Hotel?
