FEB. 19 ISSUE ANSWERS: The 1835 Michigan map shows a mill on the north side of 31 Mile Road between Mound and Mount Vernon roads. The Macomb County History mentions that a mill in the area burned in 1844. Dr. Neil Gray and his brother Hugh rebuilt the mill in 1851. Ken Gray, a relative, relates this story. The Grays were involved in numerous other mills in Lakeville, Village of Romeo and Ray Township. The life of a miller appealed to Neil more than a medical career. The mill now stands on the south side of 31 Mile across from the 1935 location. A dam is usually necessary for a water powered mill to raise the water level (head) and or to store water for the dry season. In the early 1800’s concrete was not available for dam construction. After careful selection of a mill site a dam was built. The stream would be diverted to one side using cofferdams made by wooden baskets filled with rocks to push the stream to one side.
