JAN. 22 ISSUE ANSWERS: The above 1835 map of Bruce Township shows the location of Tremble Mill on East Pond Creek. Leander Tremble bought this land in July 10, 1823. Its location would be very near Fisher Lake on the Ford Michigan Proving Grounds. Tremble’s mill pond would have been smaller than Fisher Lake and his dam would have been made of soil, rocks and wooden timbers. This purchase of land came only one year after the Bailey family arrived in Romeo. The mill would have been built between 1825 and1830. We know it existed in 1835. Last week’s Record Newspaper showed a matate and a threshing floor. A mano and matate was used by native Americans to grind seeds and powders. The threshing floor in a barn was where the farmer swung his flail (above) to crack open the wheat seeds. The barn had a door facing west and one facing east. After the grain had been cracked and lying in a pile on the floor, the two doors were opened to let the west wind blow across the threshing floor and out the east door. While the winds blew across the grain, the farmer would toss the grain into the air. This winnowing process allowed the
