AUG. 28 ISSUE ANSWERS: Martha Edna Wright was born Jan. 9, 1912 in Pierce City, Mo. where she attended public school. Her bachelor of arts degree came from the University of Missouri. Then by choice, she graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1940. On July 9, 1940 the same year, she married Hicks George Griffiths, a judge and a lawyer. He died on March 4,1996. She was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, Recorder’s Court and Judge for Detroit, the first woman to do so. Martha was a Democrat from Michigan’s 17th District to the 84th Congress and re-elected to nine following Congresses. In 1956 and 1968 she sat as a delegate for the National Democratic Convention. But what kind of a thinker was she? I believe her father, who she adored, and who always told her he thought “girls smarter than boys” set the unusual bias for one confident woman. During her time in Congress, she was dubbed by The Guardian as “the mother of the Equal Rights Amendment.” She was a fierce fighter for equal rights for all peoples and women. She added the word “sex”
