JAN. 10 ISSUE ANSWERS: This antique slag glass table lamp with lighted base can be viewed in the Romeo Historical Society Archives Museum at 290 North Main Street. The yellow, pink and streaked blue and white colors are pleasing to see. Slag glass, also known as marble glass or malachite glass, is a type of opaque, streaked pressed glass. Invented in England in 1878, American manufacturers copied the process using a variety of slag additives to add pleasing color effects to glass. The colored glass panels would fill the room in multi-colored illumination. Companies during the Art Nouveau period including Tiffany, Roycroft and Stuben used slag glass in their shades. The museum staff feels that this lamp could have graced a 1920’s Romeo living room. Also on display is an Art Deco lamp with a large mogul socket that was common during the 20’s.
