NOV. 29 ISSUE ANSWERS: This art deco glass box with a metal lid sat for years on my father’s dresser. As a child I enjoyed climbing up to the top of the dresser to look into this box. In the box I might see a 1920 and 1921 nickel (as in the photo,) cufflinks, a photo of a relative or my father’s Snap-on-Tools tie bars (he sold their tools.) The art deco design period started in 1925 and progressed through the 1930’s. The goal was to create a sleek design that was not traditional. It signified luxury and wealth. The designs are streamlined and full of geometric forms and often a nude woman. Plastic, Bakelite and glass objects were often machine made. Architects used art deco principles in the Detroit Guardian and New York City Chrysler buildings. Furniture was also designed in art deco. The largest concentration of art deco buildings in the world is in Napier, New Zealand. An earthquake flattened the whole town and when the town was rebuilt, all of the builders used the new art deco style.
